Description: RARE CIVIL WAR GIBBS OR GIBB’S PATENT .52 CAL. PERCUSSION U.S. CAVALRY CARBINE CIRCA 1863. 22 ¼” barrel with the original front and rear sights. One of the scarcest Civil War Carbines with only 1052 manufactured on a contract for 10,000 as a result the burning of the plant during the New York Draft Riots of 1863. Very good overall and 100% original to the last screw. Excellent “WM. F. BROOKS/MANFR NEW YORK” maker stamp on the lock plate. Upper tang crisply stamped “L. H. GIBBS/PATD/JANY 8, 1856”. Fully U.S. Ordnance inspected with “U.S.” stamped on butt plate and two visible Ordnance Inspector’s cartouches on the left side of the stock just forward of the butt plate. Metal with grey crisp patina and wood with the original finish. Working order and excellent bore. More than half issued to the 10th Missouri Cavalry Volunteers where they saw considerable hard service during the war. SOLD Antique: Yes |
