Scarce Civil War U.S. Inspected Joslyn Model 1862 Rimfire Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine

Price includes shipping in the 48 states. This came right out of an estate of an 80 year collection. These Civil War Joslyn Model 1862 carbines are much less common than the Model 1864 that followed. It differs in that it has a friction catch on the breech rather than the pull out latch seen on the Model 1864.

Approximately 3,500 Joslyn Model 1862 carbines were made, and only 2,200 of those were U.S. government purchased like this one. Chambered in .52 caliber rimfire, the Joslyn Model 1862 carbine features a distinctive hinged, top-opening breech that allowed for faster loading than traditional muzzleloaders—an important advantage for cavalry troops. Produced in limited numbers compared to other carbines, the Model 1862 represents an early step in the U.S. military’s transition to metallic cartridges.

It retains traces of its original brown finish with otherwise a natural aged patina on the iron. The brass was lightly cleaned a long time ago. All markings are clearly readable, including the two U.S. inspection cartouche stamps on the left stock flat. The bore has some rifling showing with general wear. The barrel band is missing a small screw on bottom but is held in place firmly by the spring retainer. The lock has spring pressure, but does not click and the hammer does not remain back. This would make a nice addition to any Civil War collection.
