Sharps 1863 Cavalry Carbine "Captured and Collected" Confederate-Marked
Description: ******** FALL SPECIAL - FREE SHIPPING ******** Sharps Model 1863 Cavalry Carbine, cal. 52 percussion, 22" round barrel, breechloader, straight breech, walnut stocks, plain trigger, open sights, blued and case hardened finish, serial number C17643. This carbine falls into a range of carbines that were issued to either the 1st NY Mounted Rifles or the 22nd NY Cavalry. CONDITION: The butt stock has been cleaned and sanded to remove the Union inspector cartouches. Instead, it bears the captured and collected final inspection "Z" of Louis Zimmer, a Confederate Ordnance inspector in Richmond. A Confederate trooper "P K" made sure everyone else knew this was his carbine as noted by the initials carved in the right side of the stock, a commonly used practice by the Confederate soldiers. The butt plate likewise is lacking the U.S. marking on the top toe, and the butt stock has a chip missing there. The sling ring, whose finish does not match the rest of the carbine, was likely replaced during the Confederate inspection process. The fore arm remains in original condition, exhibiting expected nicks and dings. It is tight with no wobble. The action is strong, locking up properly at both half cock and full cock. The sights are original, with the rear sight missing the slide. The metal surfaces have aged to a dark patina with some staining and black powder pitting present. Shootable bore retains good rifling but some pitting. Carbine remains in its original percussion state and had not been converted to metallic cartridge. Interesting example of the most popular Civil War carbine issued. TERMS: No international sales. Antique so it can ship directly to you (buyers within New York State must provide an FFL only). Payment by personal check, bank check or postal money order (sorry no credit cards). 3-day non-firing inspection. If you intend to shoot it, have a competent gunsmith check it over first. Buyer pays return shipping. Packed with care and shipped USPS Mail with tracking.
