Palmer Bolt Action .50 Carbine
Description: Superb UNFIRED CW Palmer Bolt Action .50 Carbine Offered here and just acquired is perhaps the finest Palmer Civil War carbine as we have had in our more than 5 decades in the business. The Palmer model 1865 carbine was a Civil War–era bolt-action carbine patented by William Palmer on December 22, 1863 and manufactured by E.G. Lamson & Co. of Windsor, Vermont. It was the first bolt-action rifle using metallic cartridges ever accepted by the United States Ordnance Department — a major innovation in firearms technology at the time. In 1864 the U.S. government placed an order for about 1,000 carbines under this contract. Although contracted in 1864, nearly all were delivered in June 1865, after major Civil War hostilities had ended. Because of that, none saw active service on the battlefield although collectors include the Palmer when filling in a true Civil War collectible. These were stored for years and eventually sold off as surplus without being issued to troops, which is why almost all surviving examples today are in excellent condition — most never fired during military use- AND THIS ONE IS NO EXCEPTION. The Palmer carbine was a single-shot, bolt-action firearm chambered for the .56-50 Spencer rimfire cartridge ( “.50 RF”). Its bolt was unlike later rifles — machined from a solid tubular block with screw-type lands and grooves that locked it in place with a short rotating handle rather than modern locking lugs. Unlike most modern bolt actions (which use a firing pin integrated into the bolt), the Palmer used a separate hammer to strike the cartridge rim. It was strictly single shot — you pulled the bolt open, inserted one cartridge, closed the bolt, cocked the hammer, and fired. For its day, the design was very advanced — purpose-built to use metallic cartridges instead of loose powder, ball and percussion caps. Because of that survival and the low production number, Palmer carbines are very rare collector pieces today, especially in unfired or near-new condition. This specimen shows no use and again is unfired. The Palmer has no serial number which is standard for that arm. Many early metallic-cartridge prototypes like the Palmer were hand-finished with inspection marks rather than factory serial sequences. This specimen is near perfection with super crisp wood, sharp inspectors cartouches, 100% blue on barrel and spectacular case coloring. There is just one very small bruise in the buttstock from storage(shown in the last and final image and the bruise is adjacent to a rectangular inspectors cartouche on underside of stock (and not a bruise). BORE is MINT. Other than the bruise the wood is untouched. All screwheads unmarred. As a collectible, the Palmer carbine is a Civil War contract bolt-action carbine. It’s historically notable as the first bolt-action metallic-cartridge firearm accepted by the U.S. Army. With only around 1,000 made this combination of rarity and condition should make it an indispensible addition to any CW collection.
