U.S. Civil War Smith Carbine Mass Arms Co.
Description: Authentic Civil War 1861 early issue Artillery model Smith Carbine .50 cal Serial # 7211 with JH - Joseph Hannis barrel stamp. This is a interesting piece of history in very good overall condition showing full original patina. The stock and forearm are in good solid condition showing signs of previous repairs with no visable cartouches. It has an interesting carving on the butt stock along with carved initials by the head stock. The bore is clean and shiny with clear visible rifling. This Smith has recently been fully serviced, disassembled, inspected, cleaned, lubricated and reassembled (Conservation) by a professional highly regarded gunsmith while maintaining its authenticity, and the following repairs were made for proper and safe operation. A new hinge bolt was made to replace the original worn out bolt. The bolt was flame blued to match. The trigger spring was replaced with an original used trigger spring as the old one was cracked. The aftermarket side plate and bolt were replaced with and original side plate and bolt. The side plate is not numbers matching but it is an original, and had to be hand fitted. The action locks up solid and the hinge point has a very, very slight play when the gun is open. The rear trigger guard screw is missing and Im told that is common in these old Smiths. Finding an original rear screw is almost impossible. The rifle is in good safe firing condition. All the screws head are in great clean condition and the front elevation sight is fairly tight and not cracked. I dont know the full history of this gun but it is full of charactor and based on the serial number and the barrel JH stamp, was issued late in 1862. I'm sure this rifle saw action. With the peace of mind from the recent Conservation and mentioned repairs, this 165 year old Smith Carbine would make a fine addition for a Civil War enthusiast.
