Very Fine Harper's Ferry Model 1836 Dragoon Carbine
Description: This is a very fine condition John H. Hall patent breech loading Model 1836 breech loading carbine. A total 0f 2,020 of these carbines were manufctured in 1837-1838 at the Hall Rifle Works, Harper's Ferry Arsenal. The guns were finished in arsenal brown lacquer on the barrel and mounts with a case hardened action. The gun is fitted with a unique sliding ramrod/bayonet under the barrel held in place by a very strong spring. The bayonet was polished bright steel. Caliber is .64 smoothbore. The gun also features an eye bolt sling swivel attachment mounted through the wrist of the stock. This example is also the more desirable early type one fitted with an implement compartment on the underside of the stock. Amazingly, the gun still retains its original long shank cork screw ball puller/cleaning attachment tool in the compartment as shown in the photos. The only markings on these guns is "J.H. Hall, US, 1837" stamped in 3 lines at the front top of the breech block, the markings are extra crisp. These Model 1836 Hall carbines do not bear any inspection stamps in the metal or wood. This example is in very fine untouched uncleaned condition. The barrel and mounts retain 80% of the original fragile brown lacquer finish mixing with natural patina. Breech block is natural aged gun metal perfectly smooth steel, no pitting evident. Actions are very fine and tight and work smoothly. The .64 caliber smooth bore is excellent smooth bright and appears unfired. All original screws are very fine. The stock is totally untouched as well showing a deep blackish brown oilf finish and raised grain with sharp edges, no splits, cracks, or missing chips. The history of these guns is that they were issued to the 2nd U.S. Dragoons who at the time were fighting the Seminole and Creek Indians in Florida. These guns replaced the Model 1833 Hall Dragoon carbines these troops were previously issued. With only 2,020 guns produced and seeing hard use in the harsh Florida Everglades climate, surviving specimens in this exceptional condition ae fairly scarce. Here's your opportunity to add a very nice example of this scarce carbine to your collection. SOLD Antique: Yes |
