Very Scarce First Model Low Serial# 227 P.W. Porter Percussion Turret Carbine - 50 cal with 24 inch ocatagon barrel Circa 1852
Description: Very Scarce First Model Low Serial# 227 P.W. Porter Percussion Turret Carbine - 50 cal with 24 inch ocatagon barrel Circa 1852 - Interesting competitor in mid 1850's to Samuel Colt. Colt having patented his revolving cylinder, Potter attempted competition with his Patented 1851 turret firearm allowing the loaded revolving cylinder to turn facing the shooter, than as Colt's patent facing forward - Porter produced 3 models or generations of these guns in 1850's / First prototype was produced in Memphis, Tenn. where he was residing. He moved to New York CIty, and then production started in Tauntan, Mass for first model from serial#1-300 - Second model was produced Serial#301-685- & third Model 686-1225 when production end. Production ended after it was rumored that Samuel Colt used fake news media to tell public that Porter was killed by his own design, accidental backward discharge from his patent, killing him. At the time, Porter and Colt were being reviewed for firearms for Government military contracts. Porter Rifles, and carbines seen very limited use during the CIvil War. This Carbine is bit more desirable than the longer barreled Porter rifles by some collectors. This carbine is in very good original condition with crisp gray and brown patina, and mild dings and scratches. The stock is in good condition, with its original finish, and traditional buttplate. This carbine has all matching serial numbers on all componets. As with many remaining Porter rifles, and carbines, this one no longer has the cap dust cover, only portion of it remaining. Dust cover is thin piece of tin about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. This a a very nice solid representative example of a very unique ingenious repeating carbine design that flourished during the mid 19th century. Anyone is welcome to stop by and inspect this firearm in person if in the area. - Payment forms accepted: Checks / Money Orders / Mastercard & Visa add 2.5% SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: P.W.
