“CSA” Marked CIVIL WAR Antique Pattern 1853 ENFIELD Infantry Rifle-Musket 900,000+ Imported for the American Civil War
Description: “CSA” Marked CIVIL WAR Antique Pattern 1853 ENFIELD Infantry Rifle-Musket 900,000+ Imported for the American Civil War Here we present an antique Commercial Enfield Pattern 1853 Three Band Percussion Rifle-Musket, made in 1861 in England. The P1853 was the British Military Ordnance Board’s choice for adoption as the primary long arm in 1853. It was considered the apex European military gun of that time, introduced by the British War Department after several studies to improve the calibers and the dimensions of the previous models. However, it kept the same general appearance of the earlier pattern 1851. The overwhelming majority of P53 Enfield Rifles were made by commercial gun makers in Birmingham and London under contract. The Enfield 1853 rifle-musket was also used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War and was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P53 Enfields were imported into America and saw service in every major engagement of the war. This one bears the British crown motif on the lock but without the “VR” initials as is characteristic of commercially proofed guns—that is: those not proofed in the fashion of those that were meant for the British military, which is the type imported during the American Civil War. The left side of the barrel also bears commercial proof markings with the double 25 gauge markings. There is a small stamp visible (but not entirely legible) just behind the trigger guard tang. “CSA” is stamped into the lock, barrel, butt plate, barrel bands and nosecap. The letter “A” is also visible on the nosecap. The overall condition is Very Good. The action is strong all around. The bore is in good shape with nice rifling. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 39 inches. Caliber: .577 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $2250 #190950 SOLD Antique: Yes |
