“MOORE & HARRIS” Marked ENFIELD P-1853 Musket
Description: “MOORE & HARRIS” Marked ENFIELD P-1853 Musket Civil War-Era Rifle-Musket Dated “1861” Here we present an antique Civil War-era Commercial Pattern 1853 Enfield Percussion Rifle-Musket, made by Moore & Harris in Birmingham, England, in 1861. The P-1853 was Britain’s adopted rifle from 1853 until the Snider system was adopted to transform arms into breech-loaders. In addition to its use around the world with the British military, this was one of the most popular arms for the infantry during the American Civil War, especially in the South where arms making was more difficult. Regarding the maker of this particular musket, William Moore began his own business in 1808 and did work making stocks for the famous Joseph Manton until about 1820. In 1836 he was made “Gunmaker-in-Ordinary” to King William IV of England. This meant that he was placed in a higher category than many of his peers and a chosen maker for the king. He began a partnership with William Harris in 1838 and began exporting their firearms to the United States around this time. The lock on this musket is marked “1861/TOWER”. The left side of the stock bears some soldier graffiti: “L.E.R./T.H.” The left side of the barrel is marked with the commercial proofs with the bore size “25”. The right side of the butt stock features a round emblem containing “MOORE & HARRIS/BIRMINGHAM”. “MOORE & HARRIS” and two “Crown/MH” maker’s marks appear just behind the trigger guard. The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good condition other than the odd cut between the first and second barrel bands. This was done long ago as the cut is dark with age and smooth with wear. The bore is in very good shape with good rifling under a thick layer of fine dust. The action on this rifle is excellent. Here is a well-made favorite musket from the British Empire to America! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 39-3/8 inches. Caliber: .577 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
