"Civil War Austrian Model 1844 “Extra Corps" Musketoon (AL5052)
Description: "Civil War Austrian Model 1844 “Extra Corps" musketoon. Originally an Augustin tubelock, this musketoon was altered in Liege, Belgium. The tubelock was removed, a bolster with cone was brqazed to the upper right of the barrel, and it was rifled and sighted. Over 10,000 were imported into the U.S. in 1861/62 by Herman Boxer & Co., New York City. Overall length is 48". The 33½" round .71 caliber (.69) rifled barrel has a good, smooth bore. Metal has a brown patina with very light roughness. Brass furniture is fine-all numbered 79. The lock is dated “1848" (848 with the second 8 being indistinct). The barrel is dated “1846"(846) and “1852" (852). The butt plate tang has “400" at the tip. Behind the screw 6, what appears to be “L5" and then a couple of inspection stamps and “79". The rear swivel is absent. The front swivel and ramrod are present. The stock is fine with no cracks and chips. The action functions correctly. This “extra corps" musketoon is a fine example of an early Civil War import, when the Union was buying every small arm it could. It would fit nicely in any Civil War collection.
