Description: ****SALE PENDING**** For your consideration here we have a falling block Peabody Carbine in .50RF Gov’t made by Providence Tool. The Peabody carbine is a breechloading, single shot, .50 caliber rimfire carbine made by the Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island. One of an estimated quantity of 112,000 carbines and rifles produced by the company, this carbine utilized the triggerguard that acts as a breech lever, lowering the breechblock for top loading of the round. The carbine has a back action style lock and a large side hammer and was developed during the Civil War years but the great majority of these carbines never saw action in the War and were later sold under contract to foreign countries. This particular example is in fine mechanical condition with everything working as it should. Physically the metal components have lost their original finish and have worn to a handsome warm grey patina and have some high edge wear and a few scratches. The wood has taken on a very dark tone from many decades of use and oiling. There are numerous dings and pressure marks on the stock but no cracks or chips. The front sight is a blade and the rear is a folding leaf. The 20" barrel has strong rifling but is pitted. This would make a great addition to a collection of Civil War era carbines or a strong piece for a man cave. We do not recommend ever attempting to fire a firearm from this era - they are for collecting and display.
