Description: 1862 Dated CONFEDERATE Antique C.S. RICHMOND Marked “HUMBPACK” Rifle-Musket Original Military Weapon for SOUTHERN INFANTRY Here we present an antique Confederate C.S. Richmond Armory Three Band Rifle-Musket, made in 1862 in Richmond, Virginia. At the start of the Civil War, the Confederacy lacked small arms manufacturing resources. Virginia funded the modernization of the Old State Armory in Richmond with English machinery, but the Union blockade prevented delivery. In April 1861, Stonewall Jackson captured Harper's Ferry, salvaging machinery and 33,993 black walnut stocks for muskets, which were transported via rail to Richmond. The rifling machinery was moved to Fayetteville Arsenal. Originally established in 1798, the Virginia Manufactory of Arms operated until 1821. It was revived as the Richmond Armory in 1861, utilizing captured Harper’s Ferry machinery. These rifles, distinguished by hump-back lock plates from the U.S. Model 1855 Maynard, became the most common domestically produced longarm in the Confederacy, widely used by infantry. This rifled musket features the Richmond lock marked “C.S./RICHMOND,VA.” and dated “1862”. The lock inletting is correct and there is no provision for the Maynard system to be used. The stock is as it should be and not inspector marked. End of the tulip head ramrod is solid. The overall condition is very good. The stock is in good shape for its age with a faint cartouche on the left flat. Broken rear sight. Dark patina on the barrel barrel and gray patina on the lock. Strong action. Dark, good bore. A faint eagle head and “P” is discernable on the breech with legible markings otherwise. Here is an exceedingly rare, highly sought-after Confederate made rifle-musket! Own the original!
