Here we present an antique J.P. Moore “Long Enfield” Three Band Percussion Rifle-Musket, made/assembled in 1863 in New York. J.P. Moore was in the gun business in New York beginning in 1822, and the firm existed under several names until somewhere around 1870. Moore sold the United States government 1,280 “American Rifles, Long Enfield Pattern” during the Civil War. These muskets were assembled in New York by John P. Moore with a mixture of American made and imported parts to fulfill their U.S. Government contracts. George Moller states that “little is known about his sources, but they included rifles and parts imported from Britain.”

The Enfield rifle-musket was also used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War and was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P53 Enfields were imported into America and saw service in every major engagement of the war. These were also used in the Crimean War from 1854 to 1856, the Sepoy Mutiny from 1857 to 1858, the New Zealand Land Wars that ended in 1872, and many various other conflicts, especially in colonies in British Imperial possession in the 1850s, 60s and 70s.

As mentioned, these guns were previously often misidentified as Confederate arms. These rifles are now widely accepted as being assembled in New York by J. P. Moore Co. with a mixture of American made and imported parts to fulfill U.S. government contracts for arms early in the Civil War. The lock has the "eagle/M/shield" marking behind the hammer and dated "1863" in front of the hammer. This rifle-musket is among a few that are recognized as true “American Enfields” and would be a welcome addition to any Civil War collection. Moore “Long Enfields” are described in depth on pages 409-413 of George D. Moller’s book American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish and patina. The action is excellent. The bore is dim with visible rifling. The stock is solid, showing honest use. An interesting American made Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle made for the American Civil War.
