Original Military Weapon for SOUTHERN INFANTRY

Here we present an antique Confederate C.S. Richmond Armory Three Band Rifle-Musket, made in 1863 in Richmond, Virginia. At the start of the Civil War, the Confederacy lacked resources to produce small arms. Virginia allocated funds to modernize the Old State Armory in Richmond with English-made machinery, but the Union blockade prevented delivery. In April 1861, Stonewall Jackson captured Harper's Ferry, salvaging machinery and 33,993 black walnut stocks for Springfield Model 1855 muskets. The machinery was transported via rail and wagon to Richmond and Strasburg, with rifling equipment sent to Fayetteville Arsenal.

Originally established in 1798, Virginia’s Manufactory of Arms operated until 1821. Reopened as the Richmond Armory during the war, it utilized captured machinery from Harper's Ferry. The resulting rifle-muskets, identifiable by their hump-back lock plates made from the captured U.S. Model 1855 Maynard lock components, were the most common longarms in Confederate infantry, often used with percussion caps directly on the nipple.

This rifled musket features the Richmond lock marked “C.S./RICHMOND,VA.” and dated “1863”. The lock inletting is correct and there is no provision for the Maynard system to be used. The stock is as it should be and not inspector marked. End of the tulip head ramrod is solid.

The overall condition is very good. Original dark patina. Strong action. The stock is solid with a crack through the front lock screw which has slight movement.. Stable crack in the stock on the underside, behind the rear barrel band. Legible markings on the lock and obfuscated markings on the breech. The sight adjustments are frozen in place. Dark bore.
