2nd Model Maynard Carbine – Fine Plus
Description: History of this model, quoting from Flayderman’s Guide to American Antique Firearms (9th edition): “Designed by Dr. Edward Maynard, inventor of the mechanical system for priming firearms, the second model Maynard carbine, a/k/a in company literature as the “Model 1863” was manufactured between 1863-1865, in a total production run of approximately 20,202. Frame right side marked MANUFACTURED BY /MASS. ARMS MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27,1851/DEC. 6,1859. Sling ring on left side of frame; government inspector markings on left side of stock. Amont the Union cavalry regiments armed with it were the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee.” Particulars of this Example’s Condition and Usage By Existing Owner: Exterior: Barrel retains 90% original bluing, with some fine surface scratch lines, and some tiny surface pinpricks forward. Walnut stock retains 100% original finish and beautiful grain. At the rear of the stock, there is an approximately 2 inch portion of the edge adjoining attachment to the butt plate which shows surface chipping. This has no effect on the integrity of the stock which is rock solid. There remains excellent wood to metal fit with no apparent shrinkage. The frame legibly retains the standard manufacturer’s markings that Flayderman lists on the left and right flats. There is a small “s” on the rear flat of the barrel and the serial number 16266 appears on the rear surface of the trigger guard underneath the gun. There are very distinct inspector cartouches stamped on the left side of the stock’s wrist. Interior: The gun’s mechanics are fully functional. The bore is bright, retaining fully distinct lands and grooves, with some minor surface abrasions appearing inside the rear of the of the barrel. The case hardening of the frame is subdued but distinct on the butt plate. I purchased this gun in the 1990’s for use in competitions with the North South Skirmish Association. Since relocating from Virginia, I have been unable to continue the hobby and this gun has remained in my toy chest unused. Having not retained any prior targets reflecting the ability of this gun, I recently pulled the carbine out of the toy chest and shot 10 rounds at my home range, from 50 yards free standing. The cartridges I used were composed of a .517 pure lead bullet cast from a .519 Oziak mould and swaged down to size over 24 grs of 3F Goex black powder in a reduced capacity .50 cal brass casing, without filler. The ten I shot were rounds that I had retained from my last production of black powder cartridges in 2011. A picture of these recent targets are attached. Overall, I rate this gun according to the rating criteria in Flayderman’s Guide as a Fine Plus example of the particular weapon. While it is sold as a collectible, it has the additional benefit of being a capable shooter for someone with the appropriate knowledge and experience. My price is $2,500, which includes the cost of insured UPS ground shipping to the purchaser’s location in the Continental USA. Terms of Sale: 1. I only sell and ship to purchasers within the continental USA, and do not accept credit cards, pay pal or other payment pathways. I prefer payment by USPS money order, which is instant cash and after receipt will generate next business day send off of your item. Or, if you are in no rush, you can send me any form of good check you wish, with the understanding that your item will not ship until I have deposited your check and it has cleared to become cash monies, a process depending on your payee bank which may take 7 to 10 days. 2. This gun meets the definition of a pre-1898 “antique” under the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, and accordingly, may be shipped directly to a purchaser without the requirement of passing through an FFL. However, if a purchaser’s state, county, or city requires a permit for purchase, the purchaser must comply and copy documentation of compliance with payment. No firearms are sold to minors (as “minor” is defined by the law of the recipient’s state). I will need a copy of a driver’s license to confirm this for my C&R License records. The item will be shipped by UPS regular ground. Actual shipping costs, including charges for insurance and adult signature required are payable by the purchaser in addition to the indicated sales price. 3. This firearm is sold as a collector's item only. The seller assumes no liability, expressed or implied, as to the shooting capacity, safety or accuracy of the item listed for sale. Any gun, whether antique or modern, should properly be examined and approved for firing by a capable gunsmith. But please also note: Those who are not experienced in the metallurgy of antique gun barrels, the necessity of using only black powder in appropriate amounts when shooting, and the necessity of following safe loading and firing practices which are unique to black powder weapons, can cause serious injury and death to themselves or others if attempting to fire one of these guns. 4. A three-day right of inspection will apply to any gun sold, consistent with the standard terms detailed for buyers and sellers by Guns International, that is: gun must be returned unfired and not having been disassembled, in the same condition that it was forwarded, packed securely and with return made by the same insured UPS ground manner in which it was originally sent. 5. The seller is just an old guy liquidating his collection and is neither a gun dealer or purports to be an “expert” in firearms. Any comments concerning the subject item for sale are matters based upon my personal observation, research and past experience with antique firearms. SOLD |
