Antique ROBBINS & LAWRENCE U.S. Model 1841 MISSISSIPPI Rifle .54 CIVIL WAR
With Two Clear Ordnance Cartouches
Description: Antique ROBBINS & LAWRENCE U.S. Model 1841 MISSISSIPPI Rifle .54 CIVIL WAR With Two Clear Ordnance Cartouches Here we present an antique Robbins & Lawrence U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle, manufactured circa 1850 in Windsor, Vermont as part of a 10,000 rifle contract with the Ordnance Department. Design work on the Model 1841 began in 1840. The result was a shorter, solid rifle chambered for the .54 caliber. They are also considered some of the most handsome weapons ever to be adopted by the US government with the brass components like the large patchbox, trigger guard, and butt plate. The Harpers Ferry Arsenal had just completed production of the Hall Rifle when it also took on production of the Model 1841. Production continued at Harpers Ferry from 1941 until 1861, with over 25,000 produced by 1855 alone. Robbins & Lawrence in Vermont, Tryon in Philadelphia, Remington in New York, and Palmetto Armory in South Carolina all made them as well. First use of the Model 1841 was during the Seminole Wars (1816-1858) between the United States Army and the Seminole tribes in Florida. The rifle earned it name of “Mississippi Rifle” during the Mexican American War (1846-48) under the banner of the Mississippi volunteer regiment headed by Jefferson Davis. Davis got the untested rifle-musket into the hands of his men and was a deciding factor during the Battle of Buena Vista against Santa Anna’s forces. The battle was a decisive victory by the 4,594 Americans over a much larger Mexican Army of 15,000+ strong. Like many mid-century guns, the Model 1841 remained in use, in useable numbers, by the time of the American Civil War. Like the South, the Federal forces also carried this model into combat due to shortages on both sides when the fighting began. Even at this time, it was still called by its well-earned nickname of “Mississippi Rifle”. The overall condition is very good. Original patina. The action is excellent. The bore is in very fine condition: shiny bright with sharp rifling—very nice! Both the front and rear sights have been replaced. The walnut stock has nice grain, especially on the left side of the butt stock. Two clear cartouches are visible on the left stock flat: “WAT” for Captain William A. Thornton and “NWP” for Nahum W. Patch. There is a small chip that has been reattached just behind the hammer; otherwise solid. This one has a leather and canvas sling that is in serviceable shape. A very nice rifle! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33 inches. Caliber: .54 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
