Mid-1800s GAME GETTING Rifle WELSH GUNMAKER

Here we present an antique W.L. Hudson Back Action Percussion Rifle made circa the mid-1800s in Cincinnati, Ohio. William L. Hudson Sr. (1812-1861) was a Welsh immigrant who came to the United States in 1837, became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1848, and worked in Cincinnati, Ohio as a gunmaker and gunsmith in the antebellum era and beginning of the Civil War. This rifle has an octagon barrel with a short turned down section at the muzzle for use with a starter, which is not included. "W.L. HUDSON/MAKER/CIN.O" is marked on the barrel. The rifle is fired using adjustable double set, single phase triggers. It has a spurred iron trigger guard and a nicely figured walnut buttstock.

This example’s stout part octagonal barrel is in .54 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many of the maker’s names of these percussion rifles have been lost over time.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. Good bore for its age. Original brown barrel patina. Markings are legible. This example sports a solid stock with an average amount of wear, dings and dents.
