Rifled percussion musket, Model 1861, subcontract Bridesburg, with Model 1863 modifications, 1864, .58cal. The Model 1861 was the primary musket at the start of the Civil War, designed as a rifled muzzleloader, firing .58 cal. minie ball. Springfield Armory supervised the manufacturing and distribution of the Model 1861 musket, but in order to maintain contract production sub-contracted to private manufacturers, including Alfred Jenks & Son of Bridesburg, Pennsylvania. That company produced around 98,000 muskets under the subcontract and eventually implemented the model 1863 improvements. Lock is marked 1864 behind the hammer, with stamped eagle and US / BRIDESBURG in front. Barrel is marked VP over eagle head and date. Three cartouches and additional inspector mark on the barrel. All markings are crisp and sharp. Three tight barrel bands. Iron buttplate. Bore is, to the extent visible, unpitted with brown patina. Wood is very good to excellent, as are all metal and parts. Nipple is VG, and the action is tight. Has OLD initials "W.S." in finely installed, flush metal pins on the stock. A very nice example of a classic CW musket.
