Description:
.50 Spencer. 32.5" barrel secured by two spring retained barrel bands. SN: 26179. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut stock and forend. Manually cocked lever action repeating rifle with tubular magazine in butt, altered from M1865 carbine, with M1865 ladder rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, Stabler cut-off device, sling bar and ring, sling swivels and a single shoulder jag head cleaning rod. The magazine follower tube has the smooth Civil War era base plate. Standard Burnside Rifle Company markings, matching serial number on barrel and receiver. A weak script ESA cartouche is present behind the saddle bar plate. Some 1,108 Burnside produced M1865 Spencer Carbines were altered to Army Rifles by Springfield Armory in 1871, making this a fairly rare field trials rifle.
Condition
Fine. Bore mostly bright with moderate amounts of oxidation and frosting and good rifling. Barrel with some thinning arsenal refurbished blue and receiver with traces of case colors, with the balance a lightly oxidized grayish patina. Some flashes of minor surface oxidation and light surface rust are present here and there. Mechanically strong functional action. Wood with wear, showing scattered bumps, dings.
