Description:
CIVIL WAR Antique D. NIPPES U.S. Contract M1840 .70 CONVERSION Musket

MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR; 1 of 5,100 NIPPES Model 1840s

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique D. Nippes U.S. Contract Model 1840 Percussion Bolster Conversion Musket, manufactured in Mill Creek, Lower Marion, Pennsylvania in the middle of the Mexican-American War in 1847. This example would have originally been a flintlock and was likely converted to the more reliable percussion firing system prior to the start of the Civil War. The lock is marked “D. NIPPES/US” under the pan and marked “MILL/CREEK/PA./1847” behind the cock on the rear of the lock. There is an inspector’s cartouche stamped on the left side of the walnut stock with “U.S” stamped on the lock plate. This U.S. contract was the last flintlock rifles purchased by the U.S. government.

This example was produced in the middle of the Mexican-American War which ran from 1846 through 1848, and undoubtably would have also seen action in the hands of a U.S. soldier during the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865.

Daniel Nippes took over his father’s gun manufacturing mill in December of 1812 when his father died. The younger Nippes brought prosperity to the mill through work with the U.S. government. Beginning in 1837 and continuing through 1840, the mill at Mill Creek produced about 1,600 Model 1816 U.S. flintlock muskets, all being marked “US/D.NIPPES/PHILA”. The success he had with these first 1,600 muskets led to a second contract of 5,100 Model 1840 muskets between the years of 1842 and 1848, with the markings “D.NIPPES/US” and “MILL/CREEK/PA”.

The overall condition is good. Original dark patina. Barrel surface pitting. Strong action. The bore is good for its age. The stock has an average amount of ship and dings. The wrist has been repaired with brass tacks and nails (stable against hand pressure). Markings on the lock are worn, but discernable. A small bayonet lug is present on the underside of the muzzle.
