Description: CIVIL WAR Antique NORRIS & CLEMENT U.S. M1863 .58 “Everyman’s” Rifle-Musket BARREL/LOCK 1864 Dated MASSACHUSETTS CONTRACT Rifle Here we present an antique Samuel Norris & William T. Clement U.S. Model 1863 Civil War Rifle-Musket, made circa 1864 in Springfield, Massachusetts, under contract for the State of Massachusetts. The Model 1861 was the main musket used at the start of the American Civil War, with the Model 1863 serving as a variant of the M1861. This musket was designed to fire the .58 caliber Minié ball, a revolutionary bullet that improved accuracy and range. The M1861 became a symbol of the everyday soldier—an accessible and reliable firearm for the common man fighting in the war. In total, approximately 1.5 million rifle-muskets were produced in the United States, with over 800,000 made by the Springfield Armory alone. This period marked the end of the era of the traditional rifle-musket, as military technology and tactics advanced rapidly during the conflict. The M1861 was innovative for its time, being optimized for use with the Minié ball—a hollow-based, conical projectile that could be quickly loaded into a rifled barrel. Unlike solid round balls, the Minié ball expanded upon firing to create a tight gas seal, greatly improving accuracy and firing range. However, after the Civil War, the U.S. military quickly moved on from muzzle-loading weapons to breech-loading rifles, which were faster to reload and more efficient.
