CIVIL WAR Antique PROVIDENCE TOOL 1861 Musket
Description: CIVIL WAR Antique PROVIDENCE TOOL 1861 Musket Contract Model Infantry Rifle-Musket Dated “1864” Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, made on contract by Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island, in 1864. The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory, while the others were made by over 20 different private contractors, providing ample collecting opportunity amongst all the variants. Only about 70,000 were made by Providence Tool Company. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel, and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike solid, round ball. This specimen has a lock marked with a federal eagle with wings outstretched and clutching arrows in the middle of “U.S./PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROVIDENCE R.I.” The tail of the lock is dated “1864”. Government inspector cartouches on the left side of the stock are “OWA” and “CRM”. “V”, “P”, and Eagle Head view and proof marks on the left side of the barrel along with a single “M” from a sub-inspector. The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are semi-bright with some light peppering throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is smooth and solid. The bore is in good shape, dusty and with clear rifling. The ramrod is a period replacement. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a fantastic example of a Civil War rifle-musket, scarcer since it was part of a smaller contract, and still absolutely representative of what the infantryman carried. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40 inches. Caliber: .58 percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
