CIVIL WAR Antique Springfield 1863 Rifle-Musket
Primary Civil War Musket Dated “1863”
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1863 Type I Rifle-Musket, made at Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1863. The M1863 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1863 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike solid, round ball.
This .58 caliber rifle’s lock is marked “1863” and “U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. The top of the butt plate is also marked “US”. Two government inspector cartouches are visible on the left side of the rifle, the more clear of which bears the initials “ESA”. “ESA” is for Erskine S. Allin (the Master Armorer soon to be inventor of the trapdoor conversion of these muskets).
The overall condition is good. The iron surfaces have an even gray patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows period wear especially around the butt plate. The ramrod is a replacement. The bore is very well-rifled under a thick layer of dust. There is a bit of pitting in the first inch, but the rest of the bore is in great shape. The action is excellent and strong. Here is a very nice example of an 1863 Type I Civil War Musket!
