CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. TRENTON, NEW JERSEY “EVERYMAN’S” M1861 Rifle-Musket
TRENTON LOCOMOTIVE & MACHINE Co. Rifle
Description: CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. TRENTON, NEW JERSEY “EVERYMAN’S” M1861 Rifle-Musket TRENTON LOCOMOTIVE & MACHINE Co. Rifle Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, manufactured under a contract held by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton at the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company in Trenton, New Jersey circa 1863-1864. The Model 1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. Estimates vary, but Flayderman estimates that 11,495 were made at the Trenton Locomotive & Machine Company. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike a solid, round ball. Almost immediately after the war, the US military switched from the old muzzle loading type weapons to the newer breech loading rifles, bringing an end to the musket as a standard frontline firearm in American history. The overall condition is good. Solid, weathered patina throughout. The action is excellent. The nipple is fused with the bolster. The bore is dark. The stock flat shows the name “J. T. HODGE” and two Ordnance inspector cartouches. The hand carved initials “D.R.” are clear on the right heel. The stock has been repaired around the wrist and is otherwise solid. The original multi leaf sight appears to have been lost and a notch rear sight was dovetailed into the barrel before someone installed another multi leaf arrangement. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40 inches. Caliber: .60 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
