CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. TRENTON, NEW JERSEY “EVERYMAN’S” M1861 Rifle-Musket
TRENTON LOCOMOTIVE & MACHINE Co. Rifle
Description: CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. TRENTON, NEW JERSEY “EVERYMAN’S” M1861 Rifle-Musket TRENTON LOCOMOTIVE & MACHINE Co. Rifle Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, manufactured under a contract held by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton at the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company in Trenton, New Jersey circa 1863-1864. The Model 1861 rifle is often seen as the quintessential “everyman’s” firearm of the American Civil War. During that period, the United States produced approximately 1.5 million rifle-muskets, with over 800,000 crafted at the Springfield Armory alone. There’s also an estimate—by Flayderman—that around 11,495 were made by the Trenton Locomotive & Machine Company. This rifle marked the final chapter in the era of the traditional rifle-musket, as military technology and tactics quickly evolved during the war’s brief but intense years. Despite its place in history, the Model 1861 was quite advanced for its time. It was designed to fire the Minié ball—a hollow-based, conical projectile that could be easily pushed down the rifled barrel and then expand to create a tight gas seal. This innovation made the rifle much more effective and accurate compared to earlier smoothbore muskets. Shortly after the war, the U.S. military transitioned from these muzzle-loading weapons to breech-loading rifles, signaling the end of the musket’s dominance on the battlefield. The overall condition is very good. Original bright gray patina. The stock is in fine condition with little handling wear, and only showing an average amount of dents and dings. The action is robust. Reflective bore with sharp rifling. “N.J.” Stamped on the left stock flat. Legible markings. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40 inches.
