CIVIL WAR Dated Antique PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. U.S. M1861 “Everyman’s” Rifle
1863 Dated UNION MILITARY Percussion Longarm
Description: CIVIL WAR Dated Antique PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. U.S. M1861 “Everyman’s” Rifle 1863 Dated UNION MILITARY Percussion Longarm Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, made by contract by Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island, in 1863. The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory, while the others were made by over 20 different private contractors, providing ample collecting opportunity amongst all the variants. Only about 70,000 were made by Providence Tool Company. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike a solid, round ball. Almost immediately after the war, the U.S. military switched from the old muzzle loading type weapons to the newer breech loading rifles, bringing an end to the musket as a standard frontline firearm in American history. This example has a partly visible "1863" dated tail of the lock with remnants of the Providence Tool Co. markings at the front. The overall condition is good. Deep and even plum patina with case color remnants on the hammer. Stock is solid with less than average wear. Faint cartouche on the left stock flat. Strong action. The bore has dimmed and retains some shimmer with sharp rifling. The markings are worn. Replacement rear sight. This example has been refinished at some point in time. Here is a great opportunity to own a true veteran of the American Civil War. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40 inches. Caliber: .58 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
