CIVIL WAR Era Antique ALLEN & WHEELOCK .42 RF DROP BREECH Single Shot Rifle SCARCE; 1 of less than 2,000 FALLING BLOCK Rifles
Description: CIVIL WAR Era Antique ALLEN & WHEELOCK .42 RF DROP BREECH Single Shot Rifle
SCARCE; 1 of less than 2,000 FALLING BLOCK Rifles
Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Allen & Wheelock Drop Breech Falling Block Rifle made circa the early 1860s in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a production run between 1860 to 1871. Fewer than 2,000 of these rifles are thought to have been made in any variant. Though not standard issue, this rifle saw service in the American civil War through private purchases by soldiers. It features a half-octagonal, half-round barrel with a very neat adjustable rear sight. The rear sight tips and its arm points to various ranges which also have notches which allow the arm to rest in under spring tension. The lowering action of the breech block automatically ejected the spent cartridge.
In between the wood components was the iron receiver which contained the internal working components. The trigger was fitted within a ring guard under the body and ahead of the straight hand grip and made up the lever needed to lower the breech block to accept a fresh round. The hammer was very identifiable at the rear of the receiver with its pronounced tang. Barrel lengths varied based on requirements and measured from 23 to 28 inches and clearly stamped with the Allen & Wheelock company marking.
The top of the barrel is marked “ALLEN & WHEELOCK/ALLEN’S PAT. SEP. 18. 1860”. The butt plate has a cleaning rod trap.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. This example shows a mix of gray patinas. The bore is frosted, dimmed, and remains good with serviceable rifling. Solid forend. The buttstock is good, some stable cracks and repairs are present around the wrist where it meets the frame. Markings are legible.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 26 inches.
