CIVIL WAR Era Antique PRUSSIAN “KONG” Marked Percussion MUSKET with BAYONET
Used by both CONFEDERATE and UNION FORCES
Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique “Kong” Marked Prussian Percussion Musket with Bayonet, manufactured circa the mid-1800s in Prussia. A Prussian musket “Kong” typically refers to a large-caliber, heavy Prussian percussion musket used in the early to mid-19th century, often associated with elite or specialized units such as grenadiers or heavy infantry. These weapons were designed for maximum range and penetration, and their size and weight made them distinct from standard infantry muskets.
This musket would have been used in Prussian conflicts during the 1840s and 50s, including the Egyptian-Ottoman War, the Greater Poland Uprising, the Revolutions of 1848, and the First Schleswig War, before being sold to the United States government and the Confederacy as late as 1864 during the American Civil War. Though thoroughly obsolete, both the Union and the Confederacy were desperate for small arms as the South had little capability to make their own and the North had to scramble to ramp up their own production.
A shipment of about 51,000 Prussian muskets (mostly Model 1809s) was reportedly shipped to the Confederacy by the Liege arms merchant Lemaire in November 1861.
The overall condition is good. Original mixed and gray patinas. Strong action. A small chip is missing on the front of the hammer head. The bore is in good shape for its age.
