Civil War Imported M1809 Prussian Suhl 1831 / 1841 Excellent and all there
Description: Any collector of Civil War weapons has a M1809 Prussian (aka Potsdam) musket. Mainly because they are lower priced than most Civil War muskets because of their terrible condition and missing original parts. This musket represents an excellent opportunity to upgrade to a high level condition musket. Whoever owned this one took very good care of it. First off, it is complete with no missing parts. It even comes with an original M1809 Prussian ramrod! It appears this musket was made in 1831 at the Suhl factory. Then it was converted to percussion in 1841. These dates appear on the barrel breech side and bottom along with other arsenal markings. The number “69” appears on the barrel breech twice, lock side plate, inside the lock, trigger bar and tang screw head. There is an unusual roman numeral “XIII” scratched into the top of the stock butt as well as under the lock side plate? The 3 brass barrel bands show similar arsenal marks. The original Prussian M1809 ramrod is numbered “139” as well as marked with some Suhl markings. The wood is in excellent condition especially the ramrod channel and barrel channel. Other than a little roughness in back of the bolster, the barrel metal is smooth and free of pitting. The barrel has a gray patina and the lock and barrel band springs are dark almost blue. The bore is smooth and a little dark with some evidence of black powder residue. The barrel measures about 41 1/8” and the musket is about 56 ½” overall. The hammer holds on both cocks and falls when the trigger is pulled. The nipple is in good condition and is vented. The original cleanout screw is present but I did not try very hard to remove it. The original bayonet catch is still present under the barrel end. This musket has a steel butt plate as opposed the normally seen brass one. It has various unit markings. About 100K of these smoothbore M1809’s went to the Union as well as around 50K to the Confederacy. This musket is a definite upgrade for most any M1809 already in collections and there is a 1 in 3 chance it went South. SOLD Antique: Yes |
