Springfield Model 1842 Pre Mexican War Civil War Smoothbore Percussion Musket Dated 1845. The Model 1842 was used extensively in the American Civil War (1861-1865). The smoothbores, loaded with “buck and ball” were devastating when volley fired, capable of filling the air with fast-moving lead. Both smoothbore and rifled versions were deadly arms. These were used by both Union and Confederate troops. Features 3 band fastened walnut stock with sling swivels intact, 42” round barrel with bayonet lug on underside of barrel. Ramrod is present. Sights were not included in the smoothbore’s design but arrived later as the muskets were rifled later in its life Lock marked SPRING/FIELD/1845 behind hammer, action is strong, lock functions both on half cock and full cock .Butt plate stamped U.S. and the number 16. The barrel and lock show a smooth brown patina. The stock is solid with minor imperfections.,with a faint cartouche on the stock..The Model 1842 was the first regulation armory-pattern percussion musket as well as the first firearm produced by both national armories, “Springfield” & “Harpers Ferry”, with fully interchangeable parts.
