Confederate P1853 Enfield blockade musket - Georgia marked & numbered
Description: This is one of the 1,700 “large G” Enfield muskets that J. E. Barnett & Sons sold to the state of Georgia and sailed aboard the blockade runner Economist delivering these guns in March 1862. This rifle (numbered 3296) has the correct Barnett lock, larger 7/8” G stamped on the butt, and number stamped (not engraved) on the toe of the buttplate. The stamped number is correct for these “large G” Georgia guns and is described and other examples pictured in “The English Connection” by Russ A. Pritchard on pages 193 & 194. This musket is missing the rear sight but is otherwise complete. Ramrod appears original but does not contain a number which consistent with other Barnett muskets (noted by Tim Prince who estimates about 20 of these stamped number Barnett “large G” Enfields exist). Stock shows significant wear, especially behind/around the nipple where there is some wood loss but is solid overall. Both sling swivels remain. SOLD Antique: Yes |
