Fine Possible CW ID’D Superb Maynard .50 Cal. Breechloading Carbine
Description: Fine Possible CW ID’D Superb Maynard .50 Cal. Breechloading Carbine Offered here for sale and just acquired from a prestigious collection of Civil War arms is this superb Maynard breechloadingh Civil War carbine. The Maynard carbine is widely regarded as one of the best performing and most accurate of all the cavalry arms used during the Civil War. The well-favored, metallic cartridge, breech-loading Maynard carbine was the invention of New Jersey doctor Edward Maynard who patented his first model carbine in 1851. Between 1863 and 1865, the U.S. Ordnance Dept. contracted for over 20,000 2nd Model single shot, percussion, .50 caliber carbines, that were produced by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee, Mass. Issued mostly to the Federal cavalry, the Maynard proved a lightweight, very and dependable carbine that saw extensive service in the field This specimen, serial number 18964, according to McCauley’s Carbines of the Civil War, was part of the government contract issued most during the Civil War. Naturally most were used by the cavalry-hence the saddle ring attachment. Some of the most notable recipients of the carbines were the 9th Indiana, the 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennesee. The Springfield Research Service offers assistance in the way of [i]records of issuance to specific cavalry regiments and on rare occasion to the actual cavalryman to whom it was issued. This carbine does not bear the type of wear consistent with hard issuance and use in the war and is in spectacular condition. The 20” barrel retains virtually all of its original blued finish and the inspector’s cartouches on the left side of the stock are super sharp. The carbine is all matching. The specimen also retains the great majority of its color case hardening and the wood appears almost unissued. Some lightening of colors in some spots and some minor light fading to plum patina in spots. It would be very difficult to fine a better specimen in this condition and most probably the piece was issued to a regiment and perhaps seen very light use or retained unissued to a soldier during service. An historical and actual Civil War weapon which would grace any collection of Civil War arms NO RESERVE ! PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF our ONLINE S ARE HELD WITHOUT RESERVE.
