Fine U.S. Model 1855 Springfield Musket with desirable patch box
Description: Here is a fine clean example of the U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Springfield rifle-musket. The Model 1855 is fitted with the Maynard tape primer lock that automatically feeds from a roll of Maynard tape primers a single primer over the percussion nipple each time the hammer is cocked and released. The first model 1855 rifle muskets produced prior to 1859 were fitted with a long range adjustable single ladder rear sight, a brass nose cap, and had no patch box in the stock. In 1859 the gun was modified by adding a short base two-leaf rear sight, an iron nosecap, and an iron patch box in the stock to hold extra rolls of the Maynard tape primers. The guns with the iron patch box are fairly scarce and highly desirable. This example is in fine untoched condition. It has an excellent tight clean lock that is beautifully marked with the federal spread-wing eagle on the primer door, 'U.S. Springfield' on the front tang, and the date '1859' on the tail of the plate. All of the Maynard tape primer parts are present and fully functional, the action is crisp and tight. The iron parts have not been cleand or polished and wear an attractive natural light aged brown patina. There is no pitting to speak of save for some scattered very small black specks visible under the patina. The barrel proofs are excellent and the date of manufacture, '1860' is clearly stamped on the top flat of the barrel breech. The 1859 lock and 1860 barrel dates clearly indicate that the gun was assembled early in 1860 using 1859 dated locks still in inventory left over from the end of the 1859 production year. Lock and barrel production dates that are only one year apart is often encountered and perfectly acceptable. The rifled .58 caliber bore is very fine, with clean sharp rifling all the way down the barrel with no noticable pitting evident. The nipple and bolster clean out screw can be easily removed and the threads on these parts and in the barrel are perfect and not worn or stripped. I have not removed the breech plug but it is aligned correctly with the alignment mark on the bottom of the barrel and there are no vice marks on the barrel. All screws are original and in fine condition and both original sling swivels, original rear sight, and the original ramrod are present. The ramrod has some black tarnish and pitting on it but is straight and not warped. The walnut stock is in fine condition with a nice medium dark oiled finish and shows no signs of having been sanded as all the matal parts fit correctly. There are no cracks or missing chips in the stock and it shows only the slightest smooth handling wear with strong well defined edges. The stock has two very crisp inspection stamps on the left flat with 'ESA' for Springfield Master Armorer Erskine S. Allin and 'HSH' for sub-inspector Henry S, Hill. The Model 1855 rifle-muskets saw hard use in the early years of the Civil War before the Model 1861 rifle-muskets were issued. Consequently, these guns are ususally found in well used condition. Overall, this example is in much better condition than what is usually found and has nothing to apologize for. The buyer will pay the actual shipping cost and has the usual three day inspection period. SOLD Antique: Yes |
