Interesting Original Civil War New Haven Arms Co Henry Model 1860 Repeating Rifle

Description:
This is an original Civil War 1863 production model 1860 Henry rifle made by the New Haven Arms Company, which was renamed to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1866. Brass frame appears to have been lightly cleaned a long time ago, has some handling marks, also has RBH lightly scratched into the right side of the sideplate. Proper rounded brass buttplate is in the same condition. The barrel retains a pleasing patina overall with sharp markings. Fine mechanical function. Bore rates at fine with sharp rifling, bright and shiny, with a few minor pits here and there which may clean out to a degree. The bore is certainly WAY above average. The rear sight is missing the slide. Follower and spring are reproductions as they were missing when we purchased it. The stock is very good with some dings and handling marks. The barrel is numbered 10317, which puts the production at about August of 1865, however the all the other parts including the receiver are numbered 2249 which is May of 1863 production according to Wiley Swords book. The stock also has the original base for a sling swivel, however there is no indication that the barrel ever had the accompanying “staple” for the sling. Clearly, this gun was re-barrelled in the months immediately following the cessation of hostilities. Perhaps it was damaged during the war. The presence of the sling swivel base certainly would lend credence to the idea it was carried. This gun falls into a estimated serial range of guns that were shipped on 6-20-1863 “per formal War Dept. order for 120, reduced from Baker's reqn. for 240, for the 1st D.C. Cavalry”. Further, “it is estimated that…rifles no. 1392 through 2573 represent arms purchased for the 1st D.C. Cavalry (battalion) in 1863, and were supplied by John W. Brown, agent, Columbus, Ohio, as well as the New Haven Arms Co.”. Of further note, guns 2274 & 2287 are positively identified to members of the 66th Illinois, Western Sharp Shooters. It's important to note that the 66th IL WSS guns are all fitted with slings, as are early 1st DC Cav guns. The screws, buttplate, stock, and lower tang are all matching. All in all, a very solid and presentable Henry rifle that almost certainly went off to war. This gun originally turned up in a small town in PA and had been in the owners family since the 1930's.
