Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle, Drake Alteration for Massachusetts w/ Bayonet and Gun Tools
Description: In 1861 Massachusetts received 4000 Robbins & Lawrence Model 1841 Rifles from the Federal government, apparently with the understanding/intention that if the State altered some to accept sword bayonets and forwarded about half the rifles to other states, they could keep the remaining rifles. Massachusetts contracted with the Ames Manufacturing Company to attach bayonet studs to 1500 of these rifles, and also purchased 900 sword bayonets from Ames. In August 1861, 1000 rifles with sword bayonets were sold to the State of Maine. In October 1861, 961 rifles were sold to the State of New Hampshire. Also in October 1861, 200 rifles were issued to General Butler, then in charge of the U.S. Ordnance Department's New England Ordinance Office. (The rifles sent to Butler were subsequently altered to the Lindner breechloading system.) The remaining 1839 rifles that remained in Massachusetts were altered by A. J. Drake in early 1862. The Drake alteration consisted of grinding down the brass blade front sight and replacing it with a rifle musket front sight, the base of which could be used to attach the special angular socket bayonet sold to the state by Drake. The "v" style rear sight was replaced by a sight very similar to the Model 1858 3-leaf sight. Later in 1862 most of these rifles were issued to the 46th and 51st Massachusetts Infantry Regiments, and their brass butt plates were marked with regiment, company, and rack/soldier number markings. Less than 75 of these rifles were not issued to those regiments and remained unmarked on the butt plates. This is apparently one of those rifles. I loved the untouched look of the wood on this rifle. It looks like it has never been sanded. It has not been recently refinished and repeatedly taken apart like many that you see for sale now. The fit of the wood to the metal components are nice and tight. The stock has good cartouches. The action is crisp and strong, holding correctly in all positions. The patch box even has a couple original gun tools inside. Most markings are easily legible, although because of pitting around bolster and breech caused by firing, the date on the tang is harder to make out but seems to be 1850 to match the lockplate. The barrel remains in original .54 caliber and has some strong rifling visible inside. Along with the rifle comes an original Drake bayonet that I was able to find. The bayonets themselves are rather scarce, as only 1984 of them were made. This bayonet apparently was issued to one of regiments mentioned above. While the bayonets were not marked with the regiment number, they were marked with the company letter and rack/soldier number to match those on the rifles. This bayonet would have been issued to Company K. If issued to the 46th Massachusetts, that company would have been from the Westfield, Massachusetts area. If issued to the 51st, that company was from the Blackstone, Massachusetts area. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return shipping. Shipping $65 towards the cost of Priority Mail with full insurance. It will cost me more than that to ship. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .54 Manufacturer: Robbins & Lawrence Model: 1841 Mississippi |
