Model 1860 Spencer Army Rifle
SALE PENDING
Description: Here is a fine untouched early production Spencer Model 1860 Army Rifle with all original matching parts, clean rifled bore, crisp markings and mechanics. Roy Marcot's book 'Spencer Repeating Firearms' explains that before Spencer could secure a federal contract for his rifles, Colonel John T. Wilder privately purchased 1,400 rifles directly from Spencer without involvement of the Army Ordnance Department to arm his mounted infantry regiment. Thus, none of the Wilder's rifles were subject to Federal Government contract inspections and would not bear a federal Government Ordnance Inspector's cartouche on the left wrist of the stock and no sub-inspection marks on any of the metal parts. This rifle serial number 4447 also has no federal Government Ordnance Inspector's stamps on either the wood or metal parts and never did. Serial number 4447 was not found in a search of the Springfield Research Service data files. However, my Internet research has found that serial numbers 4369, 4452, 4945, and 5794 have been identified as Wilder's Lightning Brigade Spencers. This gun number 4447 is certainly in the range of these known Wilder's serial numbers. My conclusion therefore is that this could be a Wilder's Lightning Brigade gun and further research may confirm the original ownership of this rifle. The condition is fine with a smooth dark brown aged patina on frame, lock, and hammer and a smooth blue-brown finish on the barrel. The metal parts are virtually free of pitting and the dark oil finished stocks are fine as well, have not been refinished, and do not have the usual stress crack in the buttstock. It retains the correct early loading tube with the smooth buttplate latch, original sights, internals, sling swivels, and fine screws. This is a well preserved early production gun and quite scarce. Buyer pays actual shipping cost. e-mail or call me if you have any questions. Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .52 Price: $3,750.00 Contact Seller |
