Model 1863 S.N.&W.T.C. Massachusetts Rifled Musket and Bayonet
Description: ON LAYAWAY*** In 1863 the state of Massachusetts contracted with Samuel Norris and William T. Clement of Springfield, Massachusetts for 13,000 rifle muskets, for which the state paid an average price of $13.78. By the end of 1863, 2501 of the rifle muskets had been delivered, the remainder were delivered in 1864. This is an original full-length musket, not one of the so-called “Artillery” versions that you see offered that were apparently cut down after the war. The lockplate of this musket is very smooth with strong and clear markings and is dated 1863. The barrel also is mostly smooth, with decent rifling and clear markings, but light pitting at the breech from firing makes the date there unreadable. “VP eagle” proof markings, as well as the expected inspector initials of “L.F.R.” found on these muskets, are clearly visible. Also stamped at the breech are the letters “I.C.”, commonly found on these muskets and believed to stand for “Inspected and Condemned”, apparently a practice done by Massachusetts when they took obsolete weapons out of service and sold them off. I have had other Massachusetts marked weapons in the past with the same markings, and recently sold a perfectly fine Massachusetts marked Model 1840 Cavalry saber with the same “I.C.” markings. The mechanics work correctly, holding and releasing when trigger is pressed at all stops. The ramrod is an older reproduction ramrod, not an original, though originals can be found for around $200 if the buyer wants to replace it. The stock has been sanded at some point in the past, so that only the faint outlines of a cartouche are visible. There is also a small fingernail sized patch of old wood filler on the reverse upper stock between the top and middle barrel bands. I try to describe and picture any and all faults so there are no surprises upon arrival. The musket is accompanied by an original bayonet, with US markings, which matches the smooth condition and patina of the barrel and makes for a wonderful display. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Please be aware of your state laws regarding the shipment and receiving of antique firearms. Due to FFL requirements in California, New Jersey, and parts of New York, I will not sell/ship there. Shipping charge $65.00 towards cost of Priority Mail with full insurance. Three day inspection and return policy, buyer pays return shipping. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .58 |
