Norfolk Contract M1861 Springfield 1863 Civil War Rifled Musket
This is an excellent example of a Civil War Springfield Contract model 1861 Rifled Musket that was manufactured by Welch, Brown & Co., Norfolk, Ct. in 1863 . This model musket is the basic single shot .58 cal. rifled muzzleloader, iron buttplate, contoured hammer, three barrel bands, ramrod, iron nose cap. Lock is marked "1863" behind the hammer, with the Eagle to the right side of the lock along with the “US NORFOLK” marking. Barrel marked "VP" at breech. Rear sight w/2 leafs graduated for 300 and 500 yards while the buttplate is marked "US". Three bands each marked "U". The condition of the markings are all sharp and crisp as seen in the photos. The nice dark reddish color stock has a 1 inch long hairline crack originating at the lock and radiating a short distance in two directions seen in the photos. Although there is evidence of other wear and tear on the wood from field applications it is the only significant negative damage to the wood. The cartouche on left side is not visible. It is in simply outstanding condition for a Norfolk Contract Springfield where the steel components are finished in the original white. Nice original rear sight and nice bore. Gun looks like it may have been in service but survived in fine all original condition. In the photo you can see staining where corrosion would love to start. It came out of an estate and I have not cleaned or polished the surface in any fashion. This piece is in “as found” estate condition without any modifications, changes or improvements made by me. The mechanics are fully functional. The cost of shipping and insurance is $47.00.
