Description: ORIGINAL AND EXCEPTIONAL CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE CSA FAYETTEVILLE ARMORY PERCUSSION RIFLE DATED 1864 WITH HIGHLAND COUNTY VIRGINIA GENERATIONAL FAMILY PROVENANCE. 33” rifled .58 caliber round barrel with “V/P/EAGLEHEAD” proofs at the left breech and dated 1864. Original block front sight for use with the socket bayonet correct for 1864 dated Fayetteville rifles. Original rear sight. Original ramrod. Rear of lock dated 1864 with very sharp and crisp “EAGLE/CSA” and “FAYETTEVILLE” stamps forward of the hammer. Stock with visible “PB” Ordnance inspector’s cartouche for Philip Burkhart, Master Armorer formerly of Harpers Ferry who later inspected arms at Fayetteville Armory, Fayetteville, North Carolina. 100% original in every respect and in very fine condition. Barrel with considerable original plum browned finish mixed with patina. Lock with original grey case hardening particularly about the hammer. Hammer itself with grey case hardening mixed with dark patina. Even the hammer screw retains original blue finish. Brass mounts with the original dark umber tarnish and very crisp “C S A” stamp on the butt plate tang. Stock with all the original military dark oil finish with nice aged feathering attesting to its authenticity. Old Civil War period of use initials “W W” carved behind trigger guard. Working order and good rifling with moderate darkening that with clean even better. Provenance by continuous unbroken descent in the James Ward William Wade family of Monterey, Highland County, Virginia with various Confederate soldier members that served in the War.
