Piedmont Model 1844/60 Rifled Musket
Description: This is a Piedmont Model 1844/60 rifled musket in fine condition. Produced by the Belgian firm of Augustine Francotte, this 1860 variant added a unique tang-mounted rear sight, and rifling to what was originally a smoothbore compression musket. This particular example is also notable for its cupped ramrod, which identifies it as one of only ~10,000 of these to be purchased by the American government for use in The Civil War. It appears to be original and and entirely matching, marked with Francotte’s Crown / AF mark on the upper edge of the lock, below the bolster and the left angled breech flat. The left breech flat is also marked with the standard Li’ge proof of the era, an E / LG / * within an oval. A circled inspection mark is present on the face of the bolster, and a CROWN / G inspection is present on many of the small parts, including the side plate and barrel bands. The stock has the Francotte cartouche that reads "A. FRANCOTTE. A LIEGE", and circles the Belgian "shot tower" mark. The finish is totally covered in a brown patina over most of the metal surfaces, and there is light pitting throughout. There is also minor surface roughness along the barrel. The bore is in excellent shape despite its age, with crisp rifling, though it does have uniform oxidation that's likely more attributable to time than usage. The bore also shows some discoloration of the metal in a few areas. The wood stock is in fine condition, with scratches, scuffs, and dings throughout, but no signs of structural damage. There is also no evidence of repair, replacement, or sanding, making this one fully intact and original. Antique so no licensing required. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .69 |
