Here we present an antique Sharps New Model 1859 Military Rifle, made circa 1859 and still in its original percussion format. Some of these were converted to .52 Sharps Rimfire circa 1867 for use in the West by the federal government. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War.

This Model 1859 was made to fulfill specific contracts for either the Army or Navy. The Army received 1,510 units while the Navy received 2,780—both featuring the 30-inch barrel with the lug for the saber bayonet. This is also the same model that was issued to the famous Sharpshooters led by Colonel Hiram Berdan. The majority of those rifles had the saber bayonet lug and a double set trigger, though there were those with a single trigger.

The overall condition is fine. Original finish/patina. Strong action. Bright, nicely rifled bore. Solid walnut stock. The patch box contains a spare nipple. A rare Civil War period Model 1859 Sharps rifle in superior condition!
