REMINGTON ALTERED STATE OF NY MODEL 1841 PERCUSSION MISSISSIPPI RIFLE. .... LAYAWAY?
Description:
On April 25, 1861, 5000 Remington Herkimer rifles were ordered delivered from the Watervliet NY arsenal for alterations. This was half of the total production of these Remington contract rifles. After 2500 were altered by adding the 1855 style side bayonet lug for the sword style, the order was cancelled. All of the altered rifles were delivered to the New York State militia. These rifles were received on June 25, 1861. It is interesting to note that 2000 of the total Remington riles were delivered to the arsenal in Charleston on January 30, 1860. Many of which were similarly altered for the confederacy by Happoldt. Standard features include the brass furniture which includes the butt plate, patch box, trigger guard, and two barrel bands. Rifle has a metal tulip rod with brass tip and two swivels. Barrel was finished in brown with case color lock. The barrel breech is stamped US with proof P and JH inspector stamp for John Hawkins. The walnut stock shows no vestige of any inspector cartouche. The lock is dated 1852 with Remington Herkimer maker stamp. CONDITION: Very good. The barrel is mostly a smooth brown blending to blue hue indicating it was probably blued during REMINGTONS alteration. The lock is grey patina with strong legends. The stock is proud and solid with usual scattered minor dings. Mechanically sound. Bore rifling is visible but shows minor abrasion and remains in .54 caliber.
