SCARCE CONFEDERATE VIRGINIA MANUFACTORY WM. MORGAN CONVERSION MUSKETOON CIRCA 1861-2. 69 caliber smoothbore 32 ½” barrel musketoon alteration of a Virginia Manufactory Second Model Flintlock musket. Lock plate stamped “VIRGINIA” above a script “MANUFACTORY” and dated “1817” and stamped “RICHMOND” as well. Distinctive three faceted braised bolster conversion of William Morgan of Petersburg who was paid to convert approximately 950 muskets in 1862. Dr. John Murphy’s “CONFEDERATE RIFLES & MUSKETS” devotes chapter XXXVIII pages 520-522 to these scarce conversions all of which seem to be Virginia Manufactory arms and all of which were contracted for and paid by the State of Virginia to supply it’s own troops. This particular musketoon is carved on the left butt with the initials “ELP” and “17th VA”. Heavily used but original as converted with a newer nipple and an old bolt head screw replacing the hammer screw which is definitely a period field repair. Has the original sling swivels and ramrod. Dark metal with good lock markings and has the original finish on the well worn stock. Stock has a hairline at the wrist and some minor wood missing about the lock. Stock carving is original to the period of use with the appropriate wear and ageing. Interestingly the Morgan altered Virginia Manufactory Musket illustrated in Murphy’s book is also dated “1817”.
