SCARCE FINE Civil War U.S. Infantry Whitneyville Contract 1841 Rifle-Musket with Rare Arsenal Modification
Description: Antique Whitneyville Contract U.S. Model 1841 Rifle-Musket Scarce “Mississippi” Rifle Variant with Scarcer Bayonet Lug Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1841 Rifle-Musket, made on contract by Eli Whitney’s Whitneyville or Whitney Arms Co. in New Haven, Connecticut in 1854. Only 26,500 were produced by Whitney. The Mississippi Rifle is so called because its service life included the Mexican-American War, during which Jefferson Davis (future president of the Confederacy) led his Mississippi troops, who carried and favored the rifle. It was a rugged and reliable weapon. The Model 1841 was originally made in .54 caliber, but in the late 1850s a number were arsenal reconfigured to .58 caliber, the caliber that became standard at that time. Obviously the M1841 was worth converting. Normally, a rifle that is converted is not worth quite as much, but this one bucks that trend, probably due to its use by both sides during the American Civil War. Government arsenals that were in the Confederacy at the time of the rebellion had a number of these in them. This specimen is one of those arsenal reconfigured, not just to .58 caliber, but it also got a new rear sight and a provision for a bayonet lug, which it lacked before. All three of these features follow the Colt pattern, and only 5,000 pieces received this particular conversion, making it quite rare. The overall condition is fine. One of the most distinguishing visual features of this rifle is the brass, which is bright and in very good condition. Stock is very good with the usual handling marks. Barrel and lock have a uniform dark gray patina. Markings on the breech are clear and are “U.S./ADK/VP”. “ADK” is the inspector mark for A.D. King. “STEEL” also marked on the breech just above the left side of the stock. The dates “1854” and “1855” appear on the barrel tang and lock respectively. “E.Whitney” and “N.Haven” also appear on the lock. “U.S.” on the butt plate. Barrel and the added bayonet lug are both numbered and match. Ramrod is steel with a brass tip that is typical on those M1841s made prior to 1855. Bore is very good. Action is excellent. Leather sling and original muzzle plug included. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33 inches in length. Caliber: .58 percussion Bore is in very good condition and the action is excellent. Overall condition as seen in photos. Here is a rare U.S. military long arm for your collection. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $4250 #10303 SOLD Antique: Yes |
