Scarce US Model 1861 Civil War Contract Musket by Welch, Brown & Co.
Description: NSN, .58 Caliber, 40" barrel with a fair-good, lightly pitted bore. This is one of 18,000 Model 1861 muskets delivered by Welch, Brown & Co. of Norfolk, CT, to the US government between 1862 & 1863. The metal has an overall dark gray-brown patina throughout, with some spots of plum-brown freckling and mild surface oxidation on the hammer, and patches of mottled freckling on the "(Eagle) / US / NORFOLK" marked, 1863-dated lock. A matching date is present on the barrel breech, and the proofs are still clear and legible. The barrel bands and ramrod have a mostly dark gray patina with some plum-brown mixed in, and the trigger guard and buttplate are mostly mottled brown. The walnut stock is in very good shape, with numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout, as well as a few minor chips around the lock and trigger guard. The inspector cartouche is still visible, as is a maker’s stamp on the left side between the lock screws: "W.W. WELCH / NORFOLK Ct." This is a good-very good example of a desirable Model 1861 contract musket, and would make a nice addition to any collection. Antique; SOLD Antique: Yes |
