Sharps New Model 1863 Percussion Rifle ... Bright Bore, VG-FINE ... LAYAWAY?
Description: .52 caliber. 30" round barrel secured by three rounded, solid, spring-retained barrel bands. SN: C,28963. Blued and color casehardened finish, iron furniture, smooth walnut stock and forend. Single shot percussion breechloading Sharps rifle with correct Lawrence patent military ladder rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug and sling swivels. Standard Sharps New Model 1863 lock and receiver markings covering the various patents, barrel marked NEW MODEL 1863 between the rear sight and receiver and with the standard 3-line address forward of the receiver. Reverse wrist with a clear WHR script cartouche. Left barrel flat with a block EPR inspection mark. This rifle lands in the serial number range of Sharps Rifles issued to the 2nd Veteran Volunteer Regiments, with most of the closest numbers in Springfield Research Service serial number books being issued to that regiment. Condition Very Good to fine overall. Bore mostly bright with very good rifling and some light scattered oxidation. Barrel with weak traces of thinning and fading blue mixed with a moderately oxidized brownish patina. Receiver with a mottled brownish gray patina that suggests the original case coloring. Markings remain fairly clear in metal, weaker in wood. Mechanically strong action.
