SN&WCT Marked Springfield Model 1863 CIVIL WAR Rifle Musket...MINTY....LAYAWAY?
Description: SN&WCT Marked Springfield Model 1863 CIVIL WAR Rifle Musket...MINTY....LAYAWAY?.58 caliber. 40" round barrel secured by three clamping, spring-retained barrel bands. SN: NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle} / U.S. forward of the hammer and in three horizontal lines S.N. & W.T.C. / FOR / MASSACHUSETTS and dated 1864 at the tail. Breech of barrel dated 1864 as well. Upper left breech with typical V / P / {Eagle Head}. Barrel without the expected LFR inspection found on most SN&WTC contract rifle muskets. Counterpane of stock with two crisp inspection cartouches, the first a script MTH of an unknown Springfield inspector and then the script ESA of Springfield's Master Armorer Erskine S Allin. Barrel with 1864 pattern 2-leaf rear sight, musket style front sight and bayonet lug. Barrel with strange combination of 1863 pattern clamping bands with an 1864 Springfield Arsenal pattern stock with band springs and a straight shank ramrod channel. Retains both slings swivels and an original straight-shank, tulip head ramrod that is full-length with good threads. Although the owners notes list this as a "transitional" 1863/1864 Rifle Musket, the SN&WTC contract was for the 1863 pattern guns with 1861 rear sights and 1863 pattern stocks with clamping bands without band springs. This gun has what appears to be an 1864 pattern Springfield barrel, rear sight and stock, with 1863 pattern bands and an added SN&WTC lock. The stock is definitely Springfield inspected and is definitely of the 1864 pattern, which would only receive cartouches as a finished gun. CONDITION: Metal mostly bright with crisp markings. Rear sight with most of the blue. Mechanically functional, fine bore. Stock fine and crisp with a feathery texture S/H $55....2nd firearm ships FREE, with this one. Thanks.....Greg #427-432 SOLD Antique: Yes |
