Description:
LAYAWAY?.....56-56 Spencer. 30" round barrel. SN: 22894. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut forend and butt. Lever action, manually cocked, breechloading rifle with seven-round tubular magazine in butt and a barrel secured by three spring retained solid rounded barrel bands. Top of receiver marked in three lines: SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO BOSTON MASS / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860. Matching serial numbers on upper rear of receiver and under barrel where it is concealed by the forend. Barrel with small J sub inspection on the left rear flat. Two weak cartouches are visible at the reverse wrist, behind the stock screw, the vertical script MMJ of Martin McNarry Johnson and the horizontal script DAP of Dwight A Perkins. Johnson's small block letter MMJ is also stamped on the stock comb, forward of the buttplate tang. The rifle retains the correct pattern military ladder rear sight and the original combination musket-style front sight and socket bayonet lug with German silver blade. The lower sling swivel is in place but the upper swivel is missing. The magazine follower tube is the post-Civil War variant with a grooved floor plate and does not lock into position as it should. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this number, but all of the closest numbers were issued to G Company of the 105th Pennsylvania Infantry and were in their possession in April of 1864. The closest numbers to this gun were #22715, #22868 (26 numbers away) and #22919. As only the numbers for Company G were listed, it seems quite probable that this was a 105th PA used rifle. Overall a solid and untouched example of a Civil War period Spencer Rifle that needs only a correct magazine follower tube and upper swivel to be complete.
Condition:
Very good overall. Bore is fine, mostly bright with strong six-groove rifling and some scattered oxidation, discoloration and light pitting, mostly near the muzzle. Likely SHOOTABLE BORE.... See Barrel with some nice thinning blue oxidizing to plum on the surface, and showing brighter original blue under the bands and under the barrel where it has been protected by the forend. Receiver with a mottled and moderately oxidized brownish gray patina, showing some lightly scattered surface roughness and some light pitting. Markings in metal are mostly clear, weaker in wood. Action remains mechanically function. Wood with moderate wear, showing scattered bumps, dings and mars and the not uncommon grain cracking in the butt along the line of the magazine tube where the wood is very thin.....S/H $60....2nd firearm ships FREE, with this one.
