THEODORE DESCHNER of NEW YORK 143rd INFANTRY Antique Double Rifle CIVIL WAR Civil War Veteran Gunmaker!
Description: THEODORE DESCHNER of NEW YORK 143rd INFANTRY Antique Double Rifle CIVIL WAR Civil War Veteran Gunmaker! Here we present an antique Superposed Double Rifle in .38 Caliber, made by Theodore Deschner of New York circa the 1860s. Deschner was born circa 1843 in Darmstadt, Hesse in what is now Germany. Theodore would enlist 10 August 1862 in Ithaca, New York and muster into D Company of the NY 143rd Infantry. Records show that he was promoted from Private to Corporal 24 June 1863 and to Sergeant circa 1865. He would survive the conflict and muster out with the rest of his regiment on 20 July 1865. See below for the National Park Service’s summary of movement and notable actions throughout their service in the Civil War! After the war, Theodore would have a family and 5 children. Records show that he was in Washington State for a time before apparently settling in St. Cloud, Osceola, Florida to live out his days. We were able to find a photograph of his shop in St. Cloud! All of our research will come with this piece. This rifle would have been handy in the woods or fields. Both bores are in .38 caliber, though the top is rifled and the bottom is smooth. Having two barrels allowed for fast follow-up shots in a day when one shot was all most people were going to get. The smooth bore also offered versatility in the type of ammunition used, and could be loaded with .38 caliber ball as the top barrel was, or it could have been loaded with small shot for birds or small fur bearers. A very neat piece! The overall condition is good. The action has seen better days. The left hammer is missing and the right one wont lock. The double set triggers work just fine. The bores are dark with age. “MOORE” is engraved on both locks. There are illegible markings on the top of the barrel. A nice versatile combination gun for display or to collect!
