Description: NEW PHOTOS ADDED.....LOOKS MUCH BETTER THAN PHOTOS!!! ....Tower Enfield Civil War P.53 Percussion Rifle-Musket dated 1862 ... LAYAWAY?
577 cal, 39” barrel with a moderately oxidized bore showing some bright areas and somewhat worn evident rifling. The metal surfaces have mostly toned to a pewter gunmetal and gray-brown patina showing some scattered older light pitting and a bit more noticeable erosion around the nipple bolster from honest use. The breech retains strong Birmingham proofs and the lock retains fine markings with “1862 / TOWER” in center, crown at rear and line bordering. The nosecap, triggerguard and buttplate have mostly toned a mild ocher patina showing some scattered old dings, the buttplate lightly scratched with a folky set of initials “EVC” and the nosecap stamped with a serifed “379”. The walnut stock rates very fine showing an old light cleaning with some areas darkened from the years and showing a small thin hairline crack behind the lockplate and scattered old dings, some of the hardware slightly proud of the wood. The right side of the buttstock shows another lightly carved “EVC” near an upside down “Co K 159”. No doubt these are Civil War era markings and the rifle-musket likely served with a Union regiment. An older replacement somewhat undersized ramrod is present, the proper sights are intact and the lock is crisp and seems to function well mechanically. This is a nice example of the famed P.53 that has a lot of character and no doubt saw service during the Civil War. It is missing top and trigger guard sling swivels. Research could reveal who carried this musket in the Civil War. EVC, Co. K and 159 limits it down quite a bit.
